Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world, known for its friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited temperament. Originally bred in Newfoundland (not Labrador) as a fishing and hunting companion, the breed was refined in England where it earned its name. Today, Labradors are beloved family pets, service dogs, search-and-rescue workers, and champion field trial competitors.

The Labrador Retriever Breed
Labradors are famously energetic and require substantial daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. A minimum of one hour of vigorous activity per day is recommended, including running, swimming, retrieving games, or long walks. Without enough physical and mental stimulation, they can become bored and develop destructive behaviors such as chewing or digging. Their high intelligence and eagerness to please make them highly trainable, but they also need consistent mental challenges like puzzle toys or advanced obedience work.
In terms of health, Labrador Retrievers are generally robust but are prone to several genetic conditions. Hip and elbow dysplasia are common, so responsible breeders screen their breeding stock through organizations like the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). They are also susceptible to progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), which can cause blindness, and exercise-induced collapse (EIC), a condition that affects coordination after intense activity. Maintaining a healthy weight is critical, as Labradors have a strong tendency toward obesity due to a genetic mutation affecting appetite regulation.

About Us
Golden Paw Labs was born from a simple belief: every family deserves a healthy, well-tempered Labrador Retriever, and every puppy deserves a loving, responsible start to life. What began as a small, family-run passion for the breed has grown into a trusted program dedicated to producing exceptional Labrador puppies with sound genetics, stable temperaments, and genuine social skills. We are not a large commercial kennel; rather, we are a close-knit team of breeders, trainers, and veterinarians who share a deep respect for the Labrador Retriever’s heritage as a loyal companion and versatile working dog.
Our breeding philosophy centers on health, temperament, and transparency. Every parent dog in our program undergoes comprehensive genetic testing for conditions common to the breed, including hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and exercise-induced collapse (EIC). We also evaluate structure, coat quality, and working drive to ensure our puppies embody the best of the Labrador standard. But numbers and tests only tell part of the story — we also raise our puppies in our homes, surrounded by daily sounds, gentle handling, and early neurological stimulation, so they arrive at your door confident and curious.
